It is affiliated with West Bengal State Council of Technical and Vocational Education and Skill Development and approved by All India Council For Technical Education (AICTE). It provides Diploma level technical education to its students in Survey Engineering, Civil Engineering and Geographic Information System and Global Positioning System. It is counted amongst the most reputed and renowned technical engineering education in the state of West Bengal. WBSI was established in 1947 with the intention of providing professional, technical and engineering education.

West Bengal Survey Institute is a premiere survey training institute in West Bengal. It was set up in 1947 with a goal of meeting the needs of trained surveyors of the Department of L and LR in the state. But, the students of this Institute have flourished not only throughout the latitude and breadth of the country but also abroad with their valuable contribution in the field of surveying. In its journey, the institute has upgraded to diploma level from the academic year 1988-89 and now the institute has been running with three diploma courses including one unique course of GIS and GPS.
