The Directorate of Technical Education & Training started its journey in the year 1996 when Government decided to create a new Directorate for putting intensive emphasis on technical education in West Bengal by segregating from the embraces of the Directorate of Technical Education. Since inception, it is the constant endeavor of the Directorate to spread the ambit of technical education to every nook and corner of the State and to prepare a brigade of industry ready diploma engineers fit to work across the Globe. As a result, Government Polytechnics have been established at Sub-Division levels and in some cases at Block level also to bring the scope of formal and non-formal technical education/training to the poor and unprivileged rural youths.
