At the end of Eighteenth Century a British Silk merchant David Anstruther built a palatial building at Banjetia of built up area of 14,500 sq.ft and named it as Felicity Hall. The British Governor General and higher officials used to stay in this building during their visits to Murshidabad. In 1840, Raja Krishnanath Roy of Cossimbazar purchased the felicity hall better known as -Banjetia House, situated on a sprawling area of 35.10 acres of land. Raja used this building as agriculture exhibition hall and for other purposes. Raja Krishnanath Roy gave away the entire property including another property on another side of road consisting of 100 Acres of land to establish First University of the country in about 1842. However after 100 yrs of his desire, Murshidabad Institute of Technology was founded on 26th August 1957 at, Banjetia House by the then Chief Minister Dr.Bidhan Chandra Roy and reclaimed to be the -MIT of the East.
