Founded in 1926, CTS Government Polytechnic stands as a pioneering institution born out of Bengals early industrial expansion. Its origin can be traced to the early 1920s, when the growing industries around Calcutta demanded technically trained foremen and supervisors who possess sound theoretical knowledge with hands on shop floor experience. Recognizing this need, the Government of Bengal planned to shape a new model of technical education. Under the leadership of eminent industrialist Sir R N Mukherjee, the foundation was laid for an institution unlike conventional engineering colleges. CTS adopted a unique sandwich system, blending classroom instruction with simultaneous industrial training , an approach inspired by successful models in the United Kingdom.
With the appointment of Mr. E. G. Hogben as its first Principal, the School formally opened on 1st February 1926, completed its 100 years in 2026. 
The Institute was taken over by the Government of West Bengal in 1994.
