Alipurduar is strategically located in a position which can be said Door or Dooars to Bhutan to North East. Traditionally it is famous for tea timber tobacco and tourism . Also this place has a large ST population and traditionally parliamentary constituency is ST Reserved. When it was a part of jalpaiguri district it had the scope of pride of Jalpaiguri government engineering college and good old Jalpaiguri polytechnic college. After the partition of district the necessity of a technical institute was badly felt in this rather educationally backward district. Alipurdur(Damanpur) government polytechnic will partially full fill the requirement.
